War Horse is coming to the Kentucky Center Stage November 19th – 24th. The play is set in World War I and tells the story of Joey, a horse, who is conscripted by the British cavalry and sent off to fight in France. Albert, Joey’s former owner, sets off to the front lines to rescue his horse. The play features horse puppets created by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company.

The play originated as a 1982 children’s novel by Michael Morpurgo, making its way to the stage in England. After crossing the Atlantic and debuting on stage in New York City, Steven Spielberg produced the film version of War Horse, which was released in 2011 and starred Jeremy Irvine as Albert. Celebrity chef Alton Brown visits Whitney Hall in Louisville’s Kentucky Center for “Alton Brown Live! The Edible Inevitable Tour” on November 6. You will not want to miss this evening if you are a food enthusiast, fan of his reality cooking show “Good Eats,” or looking for a unique live theater experience. The Food Network star promises stand-up comedy, music, storytelling, and food prep – just watch out for the aerial displays! The first three front row seats are billed as the “poncho zone” where, according to the official Alton Brown Tour website, “Things can get messy when Alton Brown is on stage.” Who in Louisville could resist a description like that?

Tickets to the VIP section (including the “poncho zone”) cost $125 each and include a seemingly mandatory poncho, a one hour pre-show meet & greet, a photo opportunity with Alton Brown, a keepsake VIP-section lanyard, and a commemorative signed 8 x 10 photograph.  [Read more…]

With cancer affecting millions of Americans each year, it’s likely that many of us in Louisville know someone with cancer or have gone through it ourselves.

This month, our community joins the fight against breast cancer by hosting the Making Strides of Louisville, KY walk. The walk will serve to honor those who have battled cancer, raise awareness about what people can do to lower their risk, and raise money for the American Cancer Society’s research and services.

Making Strides will be held on Sunday, October 27 in Waterfront Park (129 E. River Road). Registration starts at 11 a.m., and the walk begins at 1 p.m. [Read more…]

This event, held multiple times throughout the month of October, is perfect for the whole family. The party features trick-or-treating before and after dark amongst costumed storybook characters. Kids will love strolling through the zoo with Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz and getting their picture taken with a giant T-rex. Prepare for a race even Churchill Downs would be jealous of as the 10^th Annual Ken-Ducky Derby in Louisville kicks off on the Ohio River.

People across Louisville have generously “adopted” rubber ducks to race in the event, with over 20,000 being the goal for the event. All proceeds from adoptions benefit Harbor House of Louisville. [Read more…]

For many people in Louisville, and really all across America, summer brings something special to mind: baseball.

Louisville is a city with a great baseball tradition, focused around its most popular export: the Louisville Slugger.

The local bat factory has a rich history and is a family-owned company founded in 1884. Currently, John A. Hillerich IV is the CEO and President, the great-grandson of Bud Hillerich. Bud was the baseball fan that introduced the family woodworking business to the game in the 1800s.

I highly recommend taking a tour of the Louisville Slugger Museum, if you haven’t done so already. The manufacturer boasts the number one bat in Major League Baseball, with the famous Louisville Slugger logo burnt into each product.

At the factory, experience history in the making as you stroll through the actual areas where the bats are made.

It’s hard not to notice the factory when you pass by, as the world’s largest bat leans on the building, standing at 120 feet.

After watching the beginning of a bat’s life, why not watch them at work? Nothing says Louisville summer like a day at Louisville Slugger Field. Here, you can fill up on peanuts, cracker jacks, or whatever baseball food you enjoy while watching the Louisville Bats. [Read more…]
