This year marks the 15^th year that the Louisville Polar Plunge has been raising money for the Special Olympics. Since its inception, the Polar Plunge has become one of the Special Olympics’ largest fundraisers, raising over $5 million for Special Olympics programs in Kentucky.

Filing for bankruptcy has helped many people recover from a tough financial situation. Most people, in fact, can get back to normal after a bankruptcy; it just takes time. As I’ve talked about before, bankruptcy is designed to help an honest person get out of debt.

But what happens when a person that’s not honest files for bankruptcy to resolve their debt issues?

A recent CNN article reports the outcome of former baseball star Lenny Dykstra’s bankruptcy fraud case. Lenny Dykstra, who played for the New York Mets and then became a successful investor, filed for bankruptcy in 2009. Dykstra maintained a lavish lifestyle that he could not support through the housing bust.

In his bankruptcy filing, Dykstra listed his assets at $24.6 million and his debts at $37.1 million. His assets included several multi-million dollar homes. As part of his bankruptcy, Dykstra’s personal property was supposed to be used to help pay off his creditors. [Read more…]

To compete in a sea of credit card companies vying for consumers, many companies offer a variety of “extras perks” meant to entice you. These extras might include cash back, mileage rewards, and frequent flyer perks, among others. Some of these extras can be beneficial to the consumer, while some have received criticism for having fine print that makes them impossible to redeem (like black-out dates for redeeming airline miles).

Others, however, go beyond being merely annoying to actually harmful. Certain card-related services pushed on consumers can amount to hundreds of dollars in fees each year—money that few Americans want to pay or can afford.

Often, unsuspecting consumers don’t realize that the extras are unnecessary, have high costs, or even that they were signed up in the first place.
